Our Take-Out and Delivery Go-Tos: In the Mission

Wednesday March 30, 2016

Over the last few years, sites like GrubHub and Eat24 have expanded delivery options way past pizza or Chinese. Pretty much any restaurant in SF is now affiliated with a delivery service, and parents to a young kid, Dave and I have been reaping the rewards.

Dave and I have a standing weekly at-home date night. Sometimes, I prefer hanging out in pj’s and eating a majorly decadent spread on the sofa more than an actual date night. (Due to Bean’s food intolerances we can’t cook with dairy, eggs, or soy…so this decadent meal is our weekly serving of all the melted cheese and butter and soy sauce available in the Bay Area.)

Over the past few years, we’ve ordered a lot of food. Here are our go-to’s in the Mission.

Mission Chinese Food

Obviously. I have no idea whether it’s still a 2-hour wait for a table, but ordering online, it shows up in a half hour, still piping hot and delicious. Chinese-Korean-Japanese-American fusion, just an explosion of flavor.

Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen

Sweet corn cakes stuffed with a variety of meats, beans, avocado, and sauces. May want to think about passing on the fried yucca and plantains; they didn’t survive the travel warm or crispy.

Curry Up Now

Indian-American fusion street food. Probably our most-ordered. I’m hooked on the Unburger. Dave gets the naan pizza. Service can be very spotty though (we once had to argue whether a Vegan Kathi Roll that arrived coated in egg was a proper vegan preparation or not), order with a sense of risk. (Other than that one lapse, they’re one of the best options for vegans.)

Udupi Palace

Hands down the best Indian restaurant we’ve ever been to, and they also deliver. We always go for the spinach dosa and malabar parotha, but our friend once lapsed into mild euphoria after a bite of their saag paneer, made with fresh spinach. Also a great option for vegans.

Fritz

Messy burgers and crisp fries, for when you’re in the mood for it. Burgers come on buttery brioche bread. You also get to pick from over 20 ketchup/mayo options. We love the curry ketchup and white truffle artichoke ketchup.

Pi Pizza

This isn’t a restaurant but some kind of app/gimmick. But, the gimmick is good. Your first pizza is free, you get three pizza options, and it arrives in 15 minutes. You’ll have to walk down to the curb to get it though. A driver will roll to a stop while shoving a pizza through this window. It feels slightly clandestine. I’m still not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. And most Friday nights, they are too jammed to take orders. But, if you’ve got a hankering for pizza on a Tuesday….the pizza is delicious. Think more Arizmendi than New York-style though. Butternut squash, truffle oil, and goat cheese may make an appearance, etc.
