I’ve been struck down by the requisite December Illness. It’s going to happen, just a question of when.
So I’ll point you over to this article in this Sunday’s New York Times, which will do nothing for my book hoarding problem: “Our Bare Shelves, Our Selves:”
After G.N.P., the quantity of books in one’s home was the most important predictor of reading performance. The greatest effect was seen in libraries of about 100 books, which resulted in approximately 1.5 extra years of grade-level reading performance.
(The study didn’t look at e-books, since e-books aren’t yet widely available/read throughout the world.) And, FYI, diminishing returns only starts happening at 500 books (at 2.2 extra year reading level). Seems we have even more hoarding to do.
See y’all tomorrow.
