Friday Link Round Up: Lost Sea Lion Cubs in SF and How to Keep Flowers Fresh

Friday May 1, 2015

It’s been scorching hot in San Francisco all week, and we celebrated with Bean’s first popsicle yesterday. It may have been the happiest 30 minutes of her life, and yes, she was a sticky toddler for the rest of the day. We might have to head to Ocean Beach this weekend, to really suck up all this sun.

I hope you all have a great weekend!!

From the webs this week:

Have you heard about the plummet sardine populations off the coast of California this year? It’s a lot of bad news. Commercial sardine fishing has been shut down for the season by regulators, and Oceana (a conservation group) is estimating that 90% of sea lion pups this year are starving due to the lack of sardines. Which explains why sea lion cubs have been literally wondering through the streets of the Marina this season, and one of them had to be coaxed out from under a car on Divisadero. Poor sea lions. Now might be a good time to visit the Marine Mammal Center and give a donation if you can afford it.

Have you noticed any of the Muni Forward updates? My new favorite is that they took down the “Information Gladly Given but Safety Requires Avoiding Unnecessary Converstaion” sign. I always thought it was hysterically polite and direct.

I’m in the middle of a novel set in Paris, so this news about a secret apartment in the Eiffel Tower built by/for Gustave Eiffel himself is terribly interesting.

In new-to-me shelter news, the Ikea Foundation has designed flat-packing refugee shelters that include solar panels and cost around $1,000 each.

Apartment Therapy did a test of which popular fresh-cut flower saving technique works the best, and the results were mostly not surprising…except for the penny trick.

Back to SF, the SF Transit Riders Union challenged Mayor Ed Lee and the Board of Supervisors to ride Muni every day for 22 days. I love it! Obviously, Supervisor Scott Weiner already rides Muni every day. (Of course he does.) Supervisors David Campos (obviously too, and I’m curious if he’s riding the 49), Jane Kim, Julie Christensen, John Avalos, and Eric Mar also agreed to do it. President of the Board of Supervisors London Breed joined in and tweeted a photo of her fabulous red heels on Muni. The other supervisors have either declined or are staying mum. Mayor Lee isn’t talking about it.
