Tis the Season for… Toddler Lighting

Monday November 14, 2016

Last spring, a friend asked me for advice on lamps for her toddler’s room. I got set to fire off a bunch of options before realizing, right: flameless candles, battery-powered lanterns, and other light-up decorations fall squarely in the holiday decor category. She’d have to wait til next year.

But! Here we are! Tis the holiday season, and if you’ve been trying to figure out what kind of light to give your toddler or preschooler access to at bedtime, might I suggest a simple holiday light? This works particularly well if there isn’t an outlet near her nightstand, and doubly well if you’re also concerned about the combination of unsupervised toddlers + electrical cords.

Bean turns hers on to read books (she also has a not-really-clandestine flashlight), but often chooses to leave it on all night long. The LED lightbulb means batteries last a long time and the lamp doesn’t ever get too hot for little fingers. Giving her access to her own lamp, that she can turn on or off whenever she wants, gives her control over her room and independence from us — she can’t reach the light switches just yet.

(Before buying your own, make sure your lantern/candle doesn’t use button batteries, which are a choking and swallowing hazard for kids. AA batteries is the way to go.)

Here are some options:

Here is our lantern — the Ikea Strala LED lantern. Ikea unfortunately isn’t selling it this year as part of their holiday collection, but you can still pick them up on Amazon.

The Ikea lantern also comes in copper.

These flameless pillar candles are ubiquitous this time of year. These are from Pottery Barn.

These faux-birch candles would be awesome in a woodsy themed toddler bedroom.

Sometimes, things that look too seasonal end up looking just perfect in a whimsical kid’s room. I just imagine this tree surrounded by a wooden train depot. This one is from Home Depot.
