SF Heat Wave Survival Guide: Crissy Field’s East Beach

Tuesday September 8, 2015

Our 2015 heat waves continue this week, with temperatures in the 90s. I almost feel like it’s our civic duty to go downtown and usher all the tourists to Crissy Field. With this heat, Crissy Field has nearly turned into a San Diego-style beach, with Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz views to boot. It also happens to be a toddler beach wonderland.

It turns out Bean believes she’s half-mermaid and gleefully runs straight into the surf, arctic water temperatures, Pacific currents, undertows and sneaker waves be damned. This makes trips to Ocean Beach a touch exhilarating (see: terrifying) for those of us trying to keep her safe and alive.

So, we’ve found a new home at East Beach in Crissy Field. The waves are plentiful and soft, and they stretch deep into the shoreline. Plenty of room for a toddler to run through them screeching with joy. The water is also much warmer than Ocean Beach, which means we aren’t gasping at the iciness of it all as we play with her.

At high tide, a nearby lagoon fills up, offering a calm, natural kiddy pool for children to splash around in. A sandy bank means no scratched fingers and toes. While we were there, babies toddled in the shallow areas, some kids rested back on floats, and older kids dug for crabs (and even found some!) and slid around on boogie boards.

And what does it offer for you? Well, assurance that the waves aren’t going to topple your youngster which means a beach day might actually be relaxing, and those aforementioned Golden Gate Bridge views. It’s a very very attractive spot. Also, a huge parking lot directly abutting the sand.

So, if you’re also shaking your fist at the weather gods, pretend we live in SoCal and head to the beach.
