My Latest Escape TV: “Mozart in the Jungle”

Wednesday March 23, 2016

Has anyone else started watching “Mozart in the Jungle” since it racked up at the Golden Globes? I just started it and…it is just so mellow and sweet and not wink wink sarcastic. It is subtle, smart humor that makes you give a wise chuckle. I feel like it’s the kind of TV desperately needed in this current political climate.

The show stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Rodrigo de Souza, the newly appointed, young, hot, passionate, eccentric conductor of the New York Symphony. The character is based on real life conductor Gustavo Dudamel, but it would veer into a bit of Latino typecasting…except Mr. Bernal’s humanity and magnetic excitement doesn’t make this totally un-enticing. By his side is Hailey Rutledge, played by Lola Kirke. She is an unassuming, humble, yet ambitious oboist whose only dream (as in, back to childhood) is to play oboe for the Sympony. Her millenial eagerness and determination is refreshing. Add in the orchestra’s petty squabbles, romantic liaisons (usually used to comedic effect), and allegiance to union rules (ditto). And a glorious orchestra general manager in Bernadette Peters. And the expected brilliant classical music…  And the show is like a slow long slip of the smoothest Cabernet.

Watching “Mozart in the Jungle” feels like an active reproach of the current media environment. The world gets turned away for a few moments, and your brain recovers from all the stimuli of the day.
