Friday Link Roundup: An SFist Writer’s Terrifying Uber Ordeal and Finnish Kindergartens

Friday October 16, 2015

Hey all, what do you have planned for the weekend? Pumpkin patches and hot apple cider? Is there a way to telefax rural Virginia to San Francisco? I also need to pull my act together and figure out someone’s Halloween costume. And maybe also figure out what to do for a child that can’t actually eat any of the candy, but is now old enough to realize “heeeeyyy where did all the yummy food go, Mom and Dad.”

From around the web this week:

A heads up to all my lady friends who ride Uber: an SFist writer just shared her story of being threatened with sexual assault and murder by her Uber driver (before she got in the car, thankfully). Be careful out there, you guys. (The comments are also sobering.)

In other California news, Governor Brown signed the Ivory Loophole Bill (closing the loophole allowing ivory sales that predated the 1977 ban.) California is a hub of ivory sales, so hopefully this ban will have a large impact on the international ivory trade.

Interesting article about why Finnish kindergartens don’t teach reading.

“Every conversation between a parent and child in four conversations” had Dave and I in laughing tears while we were in New Orleans.

I really like the Apartment Therapy Design School series, particularly this post on furniture arrangement. But, really, I could read articles on furniture placement all day long so maybe that’s just me.
