Christmas Traditions: When Do You Open Presents?

Tuesday December 20, 2016

Before I married Dave, I had this idea that the world over, people who celebrate Christmas opened presents only on Christmas morning. Ok, fine, presents from aunts and uncles we opened on Christmas Eve. But the other stuff? When else could it possibly make sense to do it but Christmas morning.

Of course, now I realize that there are about as many traditions as there are families, all with their own reasons. Dave’s family opens all of them on Christmas Eve (gasp! Where’s the suspense!) with Santa’s presents arriving (unwrapped!) on Christmas morning.

This morning, Bean asked me about when we open presents. More specifically, why not, say, tomorrow. I walked her through all of the different days and explained 4 different gift opening occasions, depending on who the gift is from. She just looked at me skeptically like, “why’s this all gotta be so complicated, mama?” Good question. Traditions!

If you celebrate Christmas, when do you open presents? Is it different depending on who it’s from? Or how old your kids are? What’s your family’s tradition?
