(unclear whether the Clyfford Still gallery remains…)
Heads up, San Francisco. The SF Museum of Modern Art will finally be reopening next month, May 14th, after 3 years of renovations. Well, “renovations” may not exactly describe what has happened. The new wing of the SFMOMA, which you may have noticed because it’s actually quite hard NOT to notice, will actually more than triple the available exhibition space; it also increases the available public spaces 6-fold. (The SFMOMA will now even be 20,000 square feet larger than the New York MOMA.) We’re basically getting an entirely new modern art museum.
The museum has already started selling timed-entrance tickets for its reopening. If you’d like to see the museum any time soon, they’re recommending buying tickets early. (Re: now.) Members get in free of course, and membership for you and a guest starts at $100. Also, anyone under 18 is always free.
If you’d like a sneak peak, lets look back to three years ago when the plans were initially unveiled. The exterior shots are all soaring white planes and green walls. (The building will likely get LEED gold certification.) Inside, you’ll find airy serene spaces, in total contrast to the bright colors modern art. If you’re looking for even more detail, SFMOMA has already posted its opening exhibits. All 19 (!) of them.
It’s so exciting to have modern art available downtown again.
