Oh, lord, is this a treat.
Last Friday, Bean and I had a chance to stop by the de Young to take in the newest exhibit: Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective. It was stunning.
If you also like to sew or are into textiles and fashion, this is a must-see this Spring.
Walking in, mannequins donning the designer’s dresses are arranged on tiered white platforms. Dramatic lighting makes each dress glow, especially true for the sequined and golden embroidered coats and gowns.
The pieces are separated by eras and themes the designer has experimented with over the years, covering over five decades, from the 1950s into the 2000s. The exhibit was curated by Andre Leon Talley, former editor-at-large of Vogue.
These pieces may look beautiful in photos, but in person, they are absolutely exquisite. The detail in embroidered overcoats was breathtaking. Recent Oscar gowns that registered as boring or meh on TV looked absolutely stunning in person (you can understand how an actress could be blown away by something that didn’t look quite as majestic on tv.)
I highly recommend it for an afternoon of luxurious, silky, gobsmacking fun.
