How to Get Sand Off a Baby: The Baby Powder Trick

Monday August 17, 2015

Have you all heard about the baby powder trick at the beach?

With this heat wave, we’ve practically been treating San Francisco like an overgrown beach town. What else is a populous to do when it’s 90 degrees outside, and no one — not apartments, not houses, not restaurants, not shops — has air conditioning? Go to the beach.

So, we’ve had a lot of experience lately with de-sanding a baby. It’s…not the most fun. Until I read about the baby powder trick.

You know once you’ve dried your kid off (actually, I imagine this would be equally useful for adults too) but there’s still sand stuck to their skin, in the creases, and you’re trying to shove stiff and flailing limbs into arm holes and there’s just sand everywhere and it’s hopeless? Or, they want a banana and that is essentially code for sand-encrusted banana mush?

Break out the baby powder, sprinkle it generous over your kid, and watch the sand fall off. The baby powder will absorb any water in the sand particles, so the sand quickly dries up and falls off. Voila.

Have you ever tried it? Do you know any other beach hacks?
