A Guide to an Insider’s DC

Monday April 2, 2012

Does your Sunday morning come with a side of George Stephanopoulos? Do you have driveway moments…waiting for Nina Totenberg to come on? You’re into C-Span, aren’t you. It’s ok, you can be honest. You’re among friends here.

On  your next trip to DC, leave behind the crowds at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum and Washington Monument, and get involved in the political process.

DC’s doors are surprisingly open to the public. From Senate Committee Hearings to Supreme Court Oral Arguments, you have free and easy access to much of DC’s internal negotiating and handwringing. And bravado. Oh, the bravado.

You can watch your Senator in action, and decide for yourself whether she deserves another term. Or, check out your Congressman’s office, have a quick chat with his staff, and drop off a letter. Or maybe you just want to see Justice Kennedy grill a hapless lawyer while Justice Scalia smirks in the background.

Here are four ways to turn your next trip to DC into something much more interesting.

1. Attend a Senate or House Committee Hearing (aka: watch your Senator or Representative in action)

2. Personally drop off a letter for your Senator or Representative.

3. Attend a Supreme Court Oral Argument

4. Get a Library Card at the Library of Congress, and research something

I’ll be publishing them over the course of the next few days. It’s about to get very wonky around here.

USA! USA! USA!
