An Old/New Favorite: Terracotta Pots

Tuesday September 1, 2015

In the way that the smallest things can bring us joy, I’ve started filling our home with small terra cotta pots. Ordinary, plain, $1.25 terra cotta pots.

This is a small design detail I’ve started seeing everywhere, even in the most modern kitchens. (All of these links are to examples.)

Perhaps it’s because we live in a 3rd story apartment and we don’t have an outdoor garden. Something about the matte textured pots brings some rustic elements into our urban rooms, and the orange terracotta is beautiful paired against a bright green plant. It doesn’t take long for a patina to build on the outside, making them even more attractive.

The pots are small enough for throwing up on a window sill like this, or at your desk next to your pencils. I’ve also mixed them into our bathroom shelves, contrasting with (and adding life to) white lacquered boxes and glass jars. Or, you can nestle them into a book case. If you have the space, they also look great collected together with plants of all different heights.

Trust me, once you start accessorizing with them, it’s hard to stop.
