(I first titled this “How to Find a Stud.” Now, that’d be a different kind of website.)
Ready?
1. Grab a refrigerator magnet. Or, steal your toddler’s toy magnet. Whatever is handy.
2. Run magnet along baseboards.
3. When the magnet sticks — voila, likely a stud. (The magnet is attracted to the nails used to nail the baseboards into the studs. Or, it’s magic. Your pick.)
4. From there, you can keep using the magnet to find other studs in the room, or just measure it out. They’re likely 16 inches apart, but anything is possible in these old San Francisco Victorians and Edwardians. Measurements also get wonky around door frames and windows.
