A Toddler-Led Hike

Thursday March 26, 2015

Ever since Bean started walking, one of our favorite things to do is go on a toddler-led hike. Toddlers have such a need to control things and run the show…why not let them?

On these hikes, she has mostly absolute control over what we do and where we go. (She has to stick to the trail, though.) It is so much fun.

Sometimes, she’ll charge through the forest, seeming to thrill in the ups and downs of the uneven trail. At some point, she’ll stop and spend 10-20 minutes collecting acorns and rocks. She might hear a bird calling somewhere in the trees and we’ll stop and try to locate it. She may become obsessed with a mud puddle or a ladybug.

The rule is no directing her. No urging her to “come on, hurry up, let’s keep walking,” if she’s shown an interest in something. No telling her to pick up more acorns or less acorns. No matter how bored we get.

It is her hour or two to decide everything, and needless to say, she is thrilled. She guffaws and giggles and screams with joy. Meanwhile, we get a break from directing and can sit back and enjoy the moment. It’s a win-win for everyone.
