Well, I spruced up the place a little. Say hello to the new foggy logo and SF skyline. I added this month’s most popular posts to the side there, and the menu up top will make it easier for people to drill down into the site. If that’s a thing you want to do.
Oh, there’s a mobile site now too! Look at me, all fancy. Someone (It was Google. In bright red font.) told me it wasn’t 2009 anymore.
This redesign has been a long time coming. Far Out City has always been about getting out and learning about our city, other cities, and other places. When we added a baby to the mix, I had to change the focus a bit, reflecting the struggles we had to continue living in a city, now with a child.
There were the obvious “how do we fit a kid in this apartment” and “what do we do in the city with a kid” questions. But, more seriously, with a kid, how do you keep up with all the events and issues going on in your city, how do you stay an active and knowledgeable member of your community? It’s a struggle a lot of us face, I think, trying to keep up with what is happening in our community when we’re just trying to figure out what’s happening at work, at school, and at home.
So, I dreamed up a new Far Out City that would still be about San Francisco and travel, but with an added focus on how we and our families navigate city living. (And obviously a fun place to get reading, tv, and food recommendations. Because that’s still a part of our lives, city or not.)
A year and a half ago, I quickly designed a new version of Far Out City just to refocus it away from travel. I knew I had to get it up and running and FAST JUST START WRITING or the moment would pass and I’d decide I didn’t have the time for it after all. I’ve always felt that it looked as hastily set up as it was.
So, I’m really excited about the new look. I hope you like it too.

If you find a bug, let me know! We’re still working through all the kinks and bugs and issues (our weekend was a leeeeetle beeeeet panicky), but it is always helpful to hear from you if something is off. Don’t be shy, I very much want to know!

Thanks! I took it years ago on Treasure Island. It’s a pretty cool perspective even in person.
