What I'm Reading

On Friendship In The Modern World

Monday December 15, 2014

Tis the time of year to feel entirely schmoopy about your friendships, and what better way to kick that off than go read this article: 10 Types Of Friendships Your Probably A Part Of.

(He introduces it with a disclaimer about listicles, and I promise you this isn’t a listicle and I’m not entirely sure why he named his article this. There’s barely a real list in there.)

I think this is the most in-depth treatise I’ve ever read on modern friendships, where once we reach our late 20s and early 30s, people’s paths diverge and perhaps never join up again. Some friends go to grad school (and put off adulthood for a while) while others follow a more traditional route: buying homes, getting married, having kids.

And more, you may find yourself living thousands of miles from your best friends. Or with friends living in dozens of different cities around the globe. It all gets so complicated; you end up seeing people you absolutely adore only once every few years. I don’t think our parents’ generation had to deal with this.

Tim Urban’s point is that we all need to refocus our time and energy onto the true Tier 1’s in our lives.

It’s an insightful and thought-provoking read and a wonderful piece of advice for the upcoming year.
