Get into Nearly Any San Francisco Museum for Free, With a Library Card

Monday August 1, 2016

There are a lot of perks to living in San Francisco, and the SF Public Library system is definitely one of them. In addition to providing free snacks and lunches to kids when school is out, the library’s Summer Stride program is an entire summer of free events to get kids building and hiking, with live music and storytelling and dance.

One additional perk? With a library card, you can also get into nearly any SF museum for free. Free for your entire family.

The SF Library’s Discover & Go program lets you “check out” museum passes to participating museums.

To get started, go to the Discover & Go website and log in with your library card barcode and password. From there, you can pick a date on the calendar and you’ll get a list of all nearby museums that have passes available for that day.

We recently used the Discover & Go website to get in for free at the Children’s Creativity Museum.I have my eyes on the Pacific Coast Air Museum and USS Hornet Museum next. They also have free passes to the Japanese Tea Garden, Coit Tower, Asian Art Museum, Charles Schulz Museum, Conservatory of Flowers, Museum of the African Diaspora, Contemporary Jewish Museum, and many many more.

If you don’t live in San Francisco, your library system may also be part of the Discover & Go Program. Check out the full list of participating libraries here.
