Friday Link Round Up: New Neighbors and Wine School

Friday June 19, 2015

New tenants just moved into our building last night, and I’m fairly sure they think they’ve just moved to Pleasantville, Ohio. I’m mostly sure no one has brought an actual casserole by, but I wouldn’t be surprised if cookies have been handed off.

For the first three years we lived here, we didn’t know our neighbors at all. Dave and I were convinced our floor mates used the apartment as a pied-a-terre, because we never saw them or even heard them through the walls. When we finally had them over for pre-baby apologetic wine and cheese, we found out they thought the same of us. Ten minutes later, we were fast friends and inspecting each other’s apartments for decor ideas; they were even the first to know when I went into labor in the middle of the night. We came home to a bottle of champagne and a baby book a few days later.

Then a close college friend serendipitously moved in downstairs. When Apartment 3 moved in a few months later, they took one look at us all chatting on the steps, not realizing my friend and I have known each other for decades, and were all, “THIS IS THE FRIENDLIEST BUILDING EVER. WE’VE FINALLY FOUND A HOME.” They pulled up a chair and never looked back.

And so we’re all eyeing the latest tenants, who look star-eyed with the potential of their new place in the city. I really hope they like it here.

From around the web this week:

THE NORTH HALF OF DOLORES PARK IS FINALLY OPEN!!!

SFist tells us about a study that fermented food may help lessen anxiety. Pickles for everyone!

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration held a weather photo contest and… the photos are even beyond breathtaking? Here are the winners.

This make your own brownie bar is a brilliant idea, for parties, for Tuesday night. I’m totally the type to jam some potato chips in there.

Also awesome, this Frozen girls’ softball team.

Eric Asimov at The New York Times shares his summer wine list, all under $20.

He’s also been writing a Wine School column, which I’m guessing might appeal to most of you.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
