Solving the Ergo Chest Strap Squish

Monday May 11, 2015

Last week, I found myself staring wistfully at a mom carrying her baby in an Ergo. It was so easy then! So snuggly, so happy. Baby was content, my arms were free, and I didn’t have to choose between lugging around a stroller or negotiating when it’s ok to run into the street vs sticking to the sidewalk. Sigh.

(In full disclosure, I still haul Bean around in the Ergo sometimes — yes, I still front-carry my 35lb child. Trust me, some days, it is the easiest solution. When conditions have gotten to Stage 10 and there’s no hope in sight, I will whip that sucker out and pack myself up like a mule. Yes, all 35lbs of it.)

I’d like to transition to back-carrying her, to give myself the freedom that affords. The problem I keep running into is the indecorous chest strap issue.

You see, that strap that so conveniently goes between your shoulder blades when you front-carry ends up right smack in the middle of your chest when you back-carry. Body parts and shirts get squished, and downright inappropriate if you’re wearing anything remotely hinting at low-cut.

This morning, I had my “I’m a moron” moment when I realized I could just throw a scarf over the whole getup. Perfect, easy, and already in my closet. I’m no longer at risk of flashing young children or looking like a sweaty postgrad backpacking through Europe.

Dignity: restored. Mostly.

This works best with large scarves. Now that we’re headed into the summer months, look for billowy infinity scarves or square scarves.
