What Do You Have Under Your Bed?

Monday April 20, 2015

Dave and I did some much needed spring cleaning, and for the first time in my life, I have nothing under my bed.

In Apartment Therapy: The 8-Step Home Cure (which is required reading), Maxwell Ryan makes all of his clients thoroughly clean out everything from under their beds. He advises not storing anything under the bed too. Related to the idea of psychic clutter from Feng Shui, the items under your bed weigh you down. Also, if there’s a lot of junk piled up under your bed, you’re A) actively ignoring it, and so B) likely not cleaning it out at regular intervals, therefore C) you probably have dust bunnies down there that look like they could walk away if they wanted to, so D) you go back to actively ignoring it. Overall, an unhealthy cycle that I’m sure most city dwellers are guilty of.

I have to say, he’s right. The room feels lighter, the bed feels healthier. What we had sitting under there hadn’t been used in years, so really, I won’t be missing any of it. It’s a great feeling.

I’ll try to remember it when I start eyeing it as an underutilized storage space sometime in the next two weeks. 🙂

(I realize this photo is entirely unrelated. It’s better than a gleaming shot of the wood floor beneath my bed, right?)
