Sparking Joy

Tuesday March 24, 2015

A friend is working her way through Marie Kondo’s book and so I’ve recently had a lot of conversations about what sparks joy.

Then today, Bean and I headed to AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park and then watched some lawn bowling and I realized, sparking joy should be just as much about experiences as it is about objects in our homes. I am never more joyful than when I’m sitting on the beach here, or on a hike in Golden Gate Park with friends and family. Why do we only do this once a month? If that?

What if we lived our lives giving special credence to doing things that sparked joy?

Having a cup of tea using the nice china.

Taking a mid-day shower.

Going for a peaceful hike.

Creating a to-do list of things we have already done, just so we can experience the joy of crossing them out (A friend of mine does this, and I love it.)

And, if we purposefully sought out experiences that spark joy, would that give the material objects in our lives less power? Would we purchase less? Would we consume less? Would we zonk out to the internet less?
