A friend of mine (who is 6 1/2 months pregnant and carrying her stroller and toddler up onto Muni) got lectured last week for leaving her stroller open on a nearly-empty bus — they told her strollers had to be folded and put away, also she has to get off at the back of the bus, and also she shouldn’t be sitting in the front of the bus. Again, this was a nearly empty bus.
So, I thought it might be a worthwhile time to visit Muni’s policy on strollers:
YOU ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE YOUR STROLLER ON MUNI. No, you do not need to collapse it. Yes, you’re allowed to leave it standing. Yes, your child may sit in it. Yes, you do need to put the break on. Yes, you can even ask the driver if you can use the lift or ramp to get on/off the bus.
Let’s take it from Muni’s How To Ride Buses page:
Collapsible strollers are allowed on all Muni buses. Passengers with strollers may request the use of the lift/ramp and may leave strollers in the open position as long as the stroller is under their control and the wheel brake is set. Children are allowed to ride in their stroller. We recommend that the child’s seat belt be fastened. Strollers may not block the wheelchair securement areas or interfere with passenger movement.
Which followed the Board of Supervisor’s unanimously adopted 2012 Resolution “Urging the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to Permit Strollers on Muni Vehicles”:
RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors urges the SFMTA to re-evaluate and make changes to its stroller policy in order to make riding on Muni with children in strollers easier and make Muni service more family-friendly while maintaining public safety standards…
Hopefully that settles that.
