Hiking in Glen Canyon Park

Thursday October 30, 2014

Glen Canyon Park has become one of our favorite hiking destinations in San Francisco.

The roughly 1-mile hike is gorgeous, nestled in between the green hills of Glen Canyon. In the spring, the canyon walls are covered in yellow wildflowers.

The hike is perfect for toddlers. The terrain is flat, paths are bordered by dense brush; there are small wood bridges to stomp over (and stomp over again and again and once again for good measure), and creek beds to explore. Blue-violet Nuthatches and butterflies flit through the low mossy branches.

Glen Canyon Park is easily accessible by transit; it’s a short walk from the Glen Park BART Station and Muni hub (J-Church and Routes 23, 35 36, and 44). You can make a day of it and get breakfast in quaint downtown Glen Park — Tyger’s Coffee Shop is a perfectly low-key breakfast spot on weekend mornings.

We usually start at the trailhead off Portola Drive (MUNI Routes 48 and 52) and climb down through the canyon to exit at the new Glen Canyon Park Playground and recreation fields, then make our way to BART.

Where do you go hiking in the Bay Area with toddlers?
